Revlon Magnet: The Complete Salon Lightening Guide

In short: Revlon Magnet is Revlon Professional's end-to-end technical range for colour and lightening services — lighteners, oil-based developers and a before/during/after treatment system, all built around the exclusive BondIN System™ to protect, repair and rebuild the hair as you work. Revlon reports hair up to 30 times stronger from the first service compared with a standard lightening service.

Written for salon professionals. This is a technical range — always follow the mixing ratios, developer choice and processing times in the manufacturer's instructions, and carry out a strand test and the recommended skin/allergy alert test before every service.

What is Revlon Magnet?

Magnet is the back-bar technical range from Revlon Professional — a 360° solution for chemically treated hair that gives you everything you need before, during and after a colour or lightening service in one range. Colour and lightening are the most demanding services behind the chair: internal bonds can break during processing, and external aggressors like pollution and UV affect both the result and the hair's integrity. Magnet surrounds the technical step with prep, protection and repair so you can push blonde and lifting services further without compromising hair health.

The BondIN System™

The BondIN System™ is the technology at the heart of Magnet — a multi-step prevent, protect, rebond and repair system that runs through the range and provides a 360° protective shield around chemically treated hair. It works on two fronts, through six key ingredients.

Three bonding ingredients build and repair the hair's structure:

  • Maleic acid — creates new structural bonds.
  • Cysteine derivatives — protect and repair the hair's keratin structure.
  • Amide and amine derivatives — create additional hydrogen and ionic bonds.

Three anti-aggressor ingredients defend the hair during and after the service:

  • Chelating agents — capture metals during technical services (metals otherwise react with peroxide and make results unpredictable).
  • Antioxidants, with Moringa — inhibit the free radicals formed by chemical reactions and UV.
  • Shield ingredients — form a protective layer over the hair shaft and scalp, and help lift away the deposits aggressors leave behind.

Together they protect existing bonds, repair broken ones and create new ones, keeping hair strong from the inside out.

The Magnet lighteners

Magnet offers three lightening options, so you can match the product to the lift required and the technique:

  • Magnet Blondes 7 Lightening Powder (750g) — medium lift, up to 7 levels, and ammonia-free; a versatile choice for foils, highlights and full-head work. Use with the Technical Additive for maximum fibre protection during lightening.
  • Magnet Blondes 9 Lightening Powder (750g) — high lift, up to 9 levels, for the lightest, brightest blonde results with strong neutralisation and better cosmetic quality.
  • Magnet Ultimate Clay Powder 8 (400g) — a clay-based lightener, up to 8 levels, designed for freehand and balayage. Its stable, creamy mix doesn't bleed or swell and holds where you place it, so it works open-air without foils — ideal where control and precision matter.
  • Magnet Blondes Soft Lightening Cream (60ml) — low lift of around ½ to 1 level without bringing out warm undertones, for uniform, natural blonde results and delicate on-scalp work.

The "7", "8" and "9" reflect each lightener's lift potential — choose by how much lift the service needs and the technique you're using.

The Magnet developers and mixing

Magnet's developers are oil-based (the Ultimate Oil Developer line), which gives smooth, precise lift as part of any lightening technique. They come in three strengths, all in a 900ml salon size:

  • 10 volume (3%) — the gentlest option, for minimal lift and more controlled, tonal work.
  • 20 volume (6%) — the standard choice for everyday lift.
  • 30 volume (9%) — for stronger lift where the service needs it.

The Magnet Blondes powders mix at 1 part powder to 2 parts developer (for example, 30g of powder to 60g of developer). Higher developer strengths drive more lift but should be chosen against the client's hair condition. Always confirm lift and timing with a strand test, and follow the current on-pack instructions.

The Ultimate Technical Additive

The Magnet Technical Additive (300ml) is mixed into your lightening or colour formula to deliver the BondIN System during processing — it rebuilds broken bonds, creates new ones and captures metals, and it can be added to any colour or lightening brand, not just Revlon. It's dosed by the total weight of your mix, at roughly one pump (about 2g) per 90g:

  • Up to 99g of mix — 1 pump
  • 100–149g — 2 pumps
  • 150–199g — 3 pumps
  • 200–239g — 4 pumps
  • 240–299g — 5 pumps

Before, during and after

Magnet is built to support the hair at every stage of a technical service:

  • Before — Pre-Technical Equalizer (300ml): resets and equalises hair porosity before the service, so lift and tone develop more evenly from root to end.
  • During — Technical Additive (300ml): mixed into the formula to rebuild bonds and capture metals as you process (see dosing above).
  • After — Post-Technical Treatment (500ml): recovers and reinforces the hair's internal structure once the service is complete.

Repair, neutralise and maintain

  • Daily Fix & Shield (200ml) — repairs and shields the hair with a lightweight screen for daily protection against external aggressors, pollution and UV; ideal to recommend for home use.
  • Ultimate Reparative Melting Balm (100ml) — reseals the surface and reconstructs the hair deep down without adding weight, for extremely damaged mid-lengths and ends.
  • Blondes Ultimate Oil Repair & Neutralization (50ml) — a multi-benefit oil for use during and after lightening on any hair type: it seals split ends, enhances shine, controls frizz, detangles, helps neutralise unwanted warmth and creates a protective shield against external aggressors.

The Magnet service menu

Revlon frames Magnet around dedicated multi-step services:

  • Ultimate Lightening service — a multi-step service that protects, rebonds and repairs while lightening, for extreme lift and toning without compromising hair health.
  • Ultimate Reconstructing service — creates new bonds and improves condition before or between technical services; the recommended step before working on very damaged or sensitised hair (the Technical Additive used at around 10% in water).

Because the Clay Powder 8 stays put without bleeding or swelling, Magnet also supports time-efficient, foil-free balayage — Revlon and brand ambassador Raquel Saiz have created looks such as Chantilly Blonde and Surfer Blond for natural, lived-in results worked in the open air.

A typical Magnet lightening service

  1. Consult and test: assess the hair, agree the target, and carry out a strand test and the recommended skin/allergy alert test.
  2. Prepare: apply the Pre-Technical Equalizer to reset porosity.
  3. Mix: combine the chosen lightener with the right oil developer at 1+2 for the powders, dosing in the Technical Additive by mix weight.
  4. Apply and process: work according to your technique (foils, freehand or full-head), monitoring lift closely and never exceeding the recommended processing time.
  5. Rinse and treat: rinse thoroughly, then apply the Post-Technical Treatment to recover the hair's structure.
  6. Tone and finish: tone as required, then send the client home with Daily Fix & Shield, the Melting Balm or the Ultimate Oil to protect their investment.

Exact ratios, developer choice and timings vary by service — always defer to the current Magnet instructions on pack.

How to stock Magnet

Magnet works best stocked as a complete back-bar system: keep the Blondes 7 and 9 powders and the Ultimate Clay 8 alongside all three developers (10, 20 and 30 vol), with the Pre-Technical Equalizer, Technical Additive and Post-Technical Treatment so the protective steps are always on hand. Add the Daily Fix & Shield, Melting Balm and Ultimate Oil for retail and back-bar repair.
