What is Wella Koleston Perfect?
Koleston Perfect is Wella Professionals' flagship permanent colour — marketed as "our purest colour ever" for rich, vibrant and reliable results with up to 100% grey/white coverage. It's a colour-bar staple alongside L'Oreal Majirel and Schwarzkopf Igora Royal, valued for simple, dependable application whether you're lightening, darkening or changing tone.
The range is organised into families for every service:
- Pure Naturals and Rich Naturals — dependable, natural-looking coverage
- Deep Browns — rich brunette depth and tone
- Vibrant Reds — expressive, long-lasting red results
- Special Blondes — high-lift shades for blonde results
- Special Mix — creative mixing tones to intensify a shade or correct tone
What is ME+?
Koleston Perfect is built on ME+, Wella's permanent hair-dye technology that replaces the PTD and PPD molecules with a new dye molecule designed to reduce the risk of developing a new hair-colour allergy, while keeping colour performance uncompromised. It does not remove the need for safety testing: an allergy alert test is still required 48 hours before every colour service, even with ME+.
How to read the Koleston Perfect shades
Koleston Perfect uses Wella's standard notation — a depth number, then a slash, then the reflect (tone) numbers, with the first reflect dominant and the second secondary. For the full shade-by-shade breakdown and toning choices, see our dedicated Koleston Perfect shade guide.
What's the Koleston Perfect mixing ratio?
The core families — Pure Naturals, Rich Naturals, Deep Browns and Vibrant Reds — mix at 1:1 with Welloxon Perfect developer — 60g Koleston Perfect to 60ml Welloxon Perfect. The Special Blondes are the exception, mixed 1:2 (60g colour to 120ml developer) for maximum lift.
Which Welloxon Perfect developer should you use?
| Welloxon Perfect | Volume | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 4% | 13 vol | Same depth or darker; deeper results on natural hair (no grey coverage required) |
| 6% | 20 vol | 1 level of lift; grey/white coverage; working on the same depth or darker |
| 9% | 30 vol | 2 levels of lift (3 levels with Special Blonde) |
| 12% | 40 vol | 3 levels of lift (4–5 levels with Special Blonde) |
| 1.9% Pastel | 6 vol | Pastel toning, glossing and the Pure Balancing services |
Development times
Core shades (1:1): 30–40 minutes without heat, or 15–20 minutes with heat.
Special Blondes (1:2): 50–60 minutes without heat, or 25–35 minutes with heat.
Does Koleston Perfect cover grey?
Yes — Koleston Perfect gives up to 100% grey/white coverage. Use 6% (20 vol) Welloxon Perfect for coverage, working on the same depth or darker. As with any permanent colour, on a high percentage of resistant white include a natural shade in the formula to rebuild the missing pigment for an opaque, true-to-tone result. For the full method across the brands, see our grey coverage guide.
Koleston Perfect Special Blondes (high lift)
The Special Blonde shades are the high-lift series, mixed 1:2 with Welloxon Perfect — 9% for 3 levels of lift and 12% for 4–5 levels — for clean blonde results in a single colour step on suitable bases.
Special Mix
The Special Mix tones are creative additives, used to intensify a shade, neutralise or correct unwanted tone, or create custom fashion results. They're added to your target shade in small amounts — follow the Koleston Perfect mixing guidance and adjust developer to keep the target depth.
Pure Balancing & refresh services
Koleston Perfect supports a set of low-commitment refresh and gloss services for mid-lengths and ends, all mixed with Welloxon Perfect Pastel 1.9%:
- Pure Soft Balance: a hint of colour and shine for a freshly-coloured feel. Mix 1:2; after the development time, dampen the hair well (use 100ml with Special Blonde) and emulsify through the lengths and ends. Develop 5–10 minutes with heat.
- Pure Intense Balance: rejuvenates depth and tone for an even result on faded mid-lengths and ends. Mix 1:2 with Welloxon Perfect Pastel 1.9% and develop 10–15 minutes.
- Pure Rebuild Balance: refreshes depth and tone while strengthening the hair with WELLAPLEX. Mix 1:2 plus 2ml of WELLAPLEX No.1 Bond Maker per 30g of colour; develop 10–15 minutes, then rinse and apply WELLAPLEX No.2 Bond Stabiliser for 10 minutes.
- Pure Glossing: a quick colour-and-shine top-up between visits. Mix 1:1:1 — one part Koleston Perfect, one part Welloxon Perfect Pastel 1.9% and one part INVIGO Post Color Treatment (or System Professional Color Save Conditioner). Develop 5–10 minutes.
Pastel toning
For pastel blonde results and correcting unwanted tone, work on evenly pre-lightened or natural hair around half a level lighter than the required final result, using shades across the 10/ and 9/ lines. Mix 1:2 with Welloxon Perfect Pastel 1.9% and develop 5–15 minutes. To keep the result even, comb the hair every 5 minutes during development until the desired tone is reached.
How do you apply and finish Koleston Perfect?
Mix to the correct ratio, apply for the service (full head, partial, root retouch, glossing or colour correction), and process for the development time above. After processing, emulsify the colour with a little warm water and rinse out well. Lightly shampoo with a colour-safe shampoo (such as Wella INVIGO Brilliance or System Professional Color Save), then use a post-colour treatment (INVIGO Post Color Treatment or System Professional Color Lock Emulsion) to neutralise oxidation residues, stabilise the colour and improve retention.
Always carry out an allergy alert test 48 hours before each colour service — including with ME+ — plus a strand test where appropriate.
