In short: Majirel Cool Cover is L'Oreal Professionnel's permanent crème colour built for cool, ashy results and dependable grey coverage — high neutralisation, high resistance and extreme coverage, with ultra-cool reflects. Mix it 1:1.5 with L'Oreal Creme Oxydant (one 60ml tube to 90ml developer), apply to dry hair, process for up to 35 minutes and cover up to 100% white hair while neutralising unwanted warmth and brassiness.

What is Majirel Cool Cover?
Majirel Cool Cover is part of the Majirel permanent colour family, so it mixes and behaves exactly as you would expect from Majirel — rich, even, long-lasting colour built on the same Ionène G and Incell technology that helps protect the hair during processing. The difference is in the pigment: Cool Cover shades are deliberately weighted towards ash and metallic tones, so they cancel the gold and orange that can surface as colour develops or as natural warmth shows through. L'Oreal positions it as a high-neutralisation, high-resistance, extreme-coverage colour with ultra-cool reflects — made for clients with warmer natural bases who want to maintain a cool result.
In short, it is the line you reach for when a client wants a cooler, cleaner result, or when warmth keeps creeping back on the regrowth. It covers white hair completely while keeping the tone ashy rather than warm.
When should you use Cool Cover?
- Clients with warmer natural bases who go warm or brassy on the regrowth between colours
- Anyone who wants a cool, ashy, expensive-looking result rather than golden warmth
- Covering up to 100% white hair without the coverage turning warm
- Neutralising unwanted gold and orange through the mid-lengths as you colour
- Brunettes and blondes who consistently ask for no red and no gold
If a client wants warmth, depth or fashion tones, reach for standard Majirel instead — Cool Cover is specifically a cool-result line.
Understanding the Cool Cover shades
Cool Cover uses the standard L'Oreal numbering, so once you can read the code you can predict the result. The number before the dot is the depth (how light or dark), and the numbers after the dot are the reflect (the tone).
| Code | What it means |
|---|---|
| Whole number (e.g. 5, 6, 7) | Base shade — the natural depth used for coverage |
| .1 (e.g. 6.1) | Ash reflect — cools and neutralises warmth |
| .17 (e.g. 6.17) | Ash plus metallic (iridescent) reflect — the deepest, coolest, most anti-warm option |
The range runs from 5 (light brown) up to 9 (lightest cool blonde) in base, ash (.1) and ash-metallic (.17) variants — for example 5, 5.1, 5.17, 6, 6.1, 6.17, 7, 7.1, 8, 8.1 and 9. The higher the depth number, the lighter the shade; the higher the reflect, the cooler and more neutralising the result.
What's the Cool Cover mixing ratio?
Cool Cover mixes at a 1:1.5 ratio — one 60ml tube of colour to 90ml of Creme Oxydant developer, applied to dry hair. Mix to a smooth, even cream. The current formula is designed to work with L'Oreal's OTT (Odour Trapping Technology) Cream Oxydant, for less ammonia odour during processing, a smoother mix and a more comfortable application.
Which developer (oxydant) should you use?
Cool Cover is used with 12.5, 20 or 30 vol Creme Oxydant, always at the 1:1.5 ratio. Use 20 or 30 vol for coverage with up to two to three levels of lift, or 12.5 vol to refresh lengths and ends. For a fuller refresher, see our guide to developer volumes.
| Developer | Strength | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 12.5 vol | 3.75% | Refreshing lengths and ends, tone-on-tone |
| 20 vol | 6% | White-hair coverage; used in the extreme-coverage mix |
| 30 vol | 9% | Up to two to three levels of lift |
How to cover white hair with Cool Cover
L'Oreal gives Cool Cover two coverage options:
- Natural coverage: for a more natural result on up to 100% white hair, use your target Cool Cover shade on its own.
- Extreme coverage: for 50–100% white hair, mix ½ tube (30ml) of your target shade plus ½ tube (30ml) of the Cool Cover base shade with 90ml of 20 Volume OTT Cream Oxydant — for example ½ of 6.1 (target) plus ½ of 6 (base). The base shade adds the natural pigment needed for solid, even coverage on resistant white.
For matching colour and developer to grey percentage across the L'Oreal ranges, see our grey coverage guide.
How do you apply Majirel Cool Cover?
- Section clean, dry hair and mix your shade 1:1.5 with the chosen oxydant.
- Apply to dry hair, working the regrowth first, then through the mid-lengths and ends as needed.
- Process for up to 35 minutes — follow current shade timings, as resistant white may need the full time.
- Emulsify with a little warm water, massage gently, then rinse thoroughly.
- Finish with a colour-safe shampoo and a conditioner or post-colour treatment.
Always carry out an allergy alert test 48 hours before each use — even if hair colouring products have been used before — plus a strand test where appropriate.
Cool Cover vs standard Majirel
| Majirel Cool Cover | Majirel (standard) | |
|---|---|---|
| Result | Cool, ashy, anti-warm | Full spectrum — natural, warm and fashion tones |
| Pigment bias | Ash and metallic (ultra-cool reflects) | Balanced across the palette |
| Grey coverage | Up to 100% | Up to 100% |
| Mixing ratio | 1:1.5 | 1:1.5 |
| Best for | Neutralising warmth, cool results | Warmth, depth, creative colour |
Can you mix Cool Cover with other colours?
Keep Cool Cover within its own family. Because of its unique taste of colour, Cool Cover should only be intermixed within its own range — blending it with standard Majirel or other lines dilutes the cool pigments and you lose the neutralising effect, which is the whole point of the line. Mix Cool Cover shades with each other (for example a base shade with an ash shade for white coverage), but do not cross it with warm or standard ranges.

Frequently asked questions
What is Majirel Cool Cover used for?
It is a permanent colour for cool, ashy results and full grey coverage. Colourists use it to neutralise warmth and brassiness while covering up to 100% white hair — ideal for clients with warmer natural bases who want a cool result.
What is the Majirel Cool Cover mixing ratio?
1:1.5 — one 60ml tube of colour to 90ml of Creme Oxydant developer, applied to dry hair, processing up to 35 minutes.
Does Majirel Cool Cover cover grey?
Yes, up to 100% white hair. For a natural result use the target shade alone; for 50–100% white, mix ½ target shade plus ½ Cool Cover base shade with 90ml of 20 vol OTT oxydant.
What developer do you use with Cool Cover?
L'Oreal Creme Oxydant — 12.5 vol to refresh lengths and ends, and 20 or 30 vol for coverage with up to two to three levels of lift. Keep the 1:1.5 ratio throughout.
What do the .1 and .17 shades mean?
.1 is an ash reflect that cools and neutralises warmth; .17 adds a metallic, iridescent reflect for the deepest, coolest, most anti-warm result.
What is the difference between Cool Cover and standard Majirel?
Both are permanent and cover up to 100% grey, but Cool Cover's pigments are weighted towards ash and metallic tones for high neutralisation, while standard Majirel covers the full warm-to-cool spectrum.
Can you mix Cool Cover with normal Majirel?
No — because of its unique taste of colour it should only be intermixed within its own family, or you lose the cool, neutralising result.
Is Majirel Cool Cover professional only?
Yes. It is a salon-professional permanent colour for trained colourists. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and complete an allergy alert test before every service.
