What Is L'Oreal Dia Light? A Salon Guide to the Acid Demi-Permanent

L'Oreal Dia Light is an ammonia-free, acidic demi-permanent hair colour (an acidic gloss) used in salons for toning, glossing and blending up to around 50% white hair. It adds tone and high shine without lifting the natural base, making it one of the most versatile demi-permanents a colourist can keep on the shelf.

What is L'Oreal Dia Light?

Dia Light is part of L'Oreal Professionnel's Dia family of ammonia-free colours. It is a tone-on-tone (demi-permanent) gloss that deposits colour and shine rather than lifting, so it fades softly with no harsh regrowth line. The current formula is an acidic gloss with no ammonia, designed for glossy, conditioned, natural-looking results.

  • Ammonia-free – gentle, low-odour and comfortable on the scalp
  • Zero lift – deposits tone only, ideal for refreshing and toning
  • Blends up to ~50% white hair for a natural, diffused result
  • High shine – the acidic pH closes the cuticle for a glossy finish
  • Soft fade – no visible regrowth band as it grows out

What is Dia Light used for?

Colourists reach for Dia Light when they want to add or correct tone without changing depth. Common uses include:

  • Toning freshly lightened or pre-lightened hair after balayage or highlights
  • Refreshing mid-lengths and ends between permanent colour appointments
  • Blending the first signs of grey for a natural look
  • Adding shine and a tonal gloss finish as a stand-alone express service
  • Neutralising unwanted warmth, or adding warmth, depending on the shade

For the full shade list and reflect codes, see our L'Oreal Dia Light colour chart.

How do you mix and apply Dia Light?

Dia Light is mixed with Dia Activateur, the dedicated low-volume developer, typically at a 1:1.5 ratio (for example a 60ml tube to about 90ml of activateur). Use 6 vol (1.8%) or 9 vol (2.7%) depending on the technique. Processing is generally around 20 minutes, or 5–20 minutes when glossing pre-lightened hair. Always follow the current L'Oreal instructions and carry out an allergy/skin test first.

Dia Light vs other L'Oreal colours

Dia Light sits alongside L'Oreal's permanent ranges. If you need full grey coverage or lift, a permanent colour such as Majirel or INOA is the better choice – compare them in Majirel vs INOA. For an ammonia-free demi within the same Dia family, read Dia Light vs Dia Richesse.
