Every colourist needs a reliable way to remove unwanted colour — a result that has gone too dark, years of build-up, banding, or a client who simply wants a change. Traditionally that meant a bleach bath, with all the stress and damage that comes with it. Zalon Pro London Colour Remover offers a gentler route: it removes artificial colour without bleach or ammonia, giving you a blank canvas to recolour from — often in a single appointment.
How Zalon colour remover works
Permanent colour develops through oxidation: inside the hair, the dye molecules swell and become trapped in the cuticle, which is what makes the colour permanent. Zalon reverses that process. It shrinks the artificial colour molecules back down so they can be rinsed away, revealing the lightest previous natural shade underneath. If the hair has been bleached or lightened in the past, that revealed shade can be lighter than the client's true natural level, because the natural pigment was already altered.
Crucially, Zalon only touches the artificial colour — it does not lift or strip the natural pigment the way bleach does. It is bleach-free and ammonia-free, contains Argan oil to add shine and condition, and is vegan and British-made.

Zalon vs bleach stripping
Bleach is a harsh chemical that lifts both artificial and natural pigment, stressing the hair and scalp. Zalon removes only the artificial colour molecules, so the hair comes through the process in far better condition. For genuine lightening — going lighter than the natural level — you will still need a lightener; see our bleach and lightener guide. But for removing colour build-up or correcting a too-dark result, Zalon does the job without the damage.
What Zalon removes — and what it doesn't
- Removes: all oxidised permanent colour, both salon and home, no matter how long it has been in the hair. It also clears residue from shampoos, conditioners, styling products and pollution.
- Does not remove: non-oxidised colours such as direct and fashion shades (red, blue, green and similar), and it will not reverse bleach, which has permanently altered the natural pigment.
One thing to watch: heavy silicone build-up can stop the product penetrating the cuticle, so a clarifying wash beforehand can help on product-heavy hair.
Who it's suitable for
Zalon suits any client who has coloured with an oxidative colour and wants to change or reset. It is not recommended on damaged, breaking or shedding hair, or for clients experiencing hair loss. As with any colour service, carry out a patch test every time — even on regular clients, since the body's reactions can change — and a strand test to gauge the result. It can be used during pregnancy, but advise clients to check with their doctor first.
The process
Zalon is a simple three-part system applied to dry hair — always follow the supplied instructions:
- Mix equal amounts of Part 1 and Part 2 (around 50ml of each, or ten pumps of each) in a tint bowl and apply to dry hair with a brush.
- Develop for a full 30 minutes — never less, or the colour can re-oxidise and fail to lift. The reaction is self-limiting, so leaving it slightly longer does no harm.
- Rinse with warm water for five minutes.
- Apply around 25ml of Part 3, lather like a shampoo and leave for one minute, then rinse for five minutes. Repeat this Part 3 step once more to finish and stop the colour re-oxidising.
A partial removal is possible but not advised — if you do attempt one, check the hair in good light every ten minutes rather than cutting the time short, as colour left behind can re-oxidise.
Zalon in practice
Two examples show where it earns its place. A client arriving with a base 6 brown who wants to return to previously bleached blonde highlights can have the artificial colour removed first, so the stylist applies the highlights without any pre-bleaching — finishing in one appointment, with the hair in better condition than a traditional four-to-five level lift would leave it.

A client who changes her colour constantly — anywhere from a base 2 black to a base 7 pink — and wants to get back to her natural level can do exactly that, because Zalon removes the artificial colour regardless of how long it has been in the hair, and without leaving the patchiness you might expect from years of different colours.

Re-colouring after Zalon
Hair can be recoloured immediately after the process — that is part of the appeal, since you are working from a clean, even base. Keep in mind that removal exposes the underlying warmth that was sitting beneath the artificial colour, so plan to re-tone or recolour to the target; our guide to toner vs demi vs permanent vs high lift covers neutralising it. While Zalon itself is gentle, the colour service that follows still uses ammonia, so very frequent removing and recolouring is best avoided — leave time between services.
Frequently asked questions
How does Zalon colour remover work?
It reverses oxidation, shrinking the trapped artificial colour molecules so they rinse away and reveal the lightest previous natural shade. It does not touch the natural pigment.
Does it remove all colourants?
It removes oxidised permanent colour, salon or home, regardless of age. It will not remove direct or fashion shades (red, blue, green and similar) or reverse bleach.
Will Zalon damage or dry the hair?
No — it is bleach-free and ammonia-free and contains Argan oil for shine and condition. The colour service afterwards is where the damage risk sits, so avoid over-processing.
Can you colour the hair immediately afterwards?
Yes. The hair is left as a clean base ready to recolour the same day, though leave reasonable time between repeat removals and colours.
Is a patch test necessary?
Yes, every time — even for regular clients, as sensitivities can change.
Why can't I see colour washing out when rinsing?
Because the molecules have been shrunk rather than dissolved, they are not visible to the eye. Rinse exactly as instructed to stop the colour re-oxidising.
